Once your item has been approved, get it to us, and leave the rest to The Tack House.
We take care of presenting your gear, photographing it, creating the listing, marketing it, responding to enquiries, managing the sale, receiving payment and arranging for it to reach its new owner.
-
You’re welcome to drop approved gear into The Tack House, or you can enquire about our collection service.
Local collection may be available by arrangement throughout South Canterbury and North Otago, with regular collection runs planned for Christchurch and Dunedin.
-
We’ll consider the brand, age, condition, current market and comparable pre-loved items when determining an appropriate selling price.
You can tell us what you’re hoping to receive when you submit your item, and we’ll discuss the proposed selling price with you before it is listed.
-
We work on a consignment basis, which means our commission is deducted when your item sells.
Our commission varies depending on the value of the item. We’ll confirm the applicable commission and any other agreed fees with you before your gear is accepted for sale, so you’ll know how it works before committing.
-
Any applicable fees or arrangements for unsold items will be explained to you before we accept your gear for consignment.
There are no surprises. You’ll know the terms that apply to your item before you leave it with us.
-
Your gear may be displayed in our store and marketed through The Tack House website, social media and other appropriate sales channels.
We take care of the photos, presentation, listing and buyer enquiries, so you don’t need to advertise the item yourself.
-
No. That’s part of what we’re here for.
We manage buyer enquiries and the sales process on your behalf, saving you from the back-and-forth messages that often come with selling privately. We will contact you if we require further information.
-
We manage this for you. Buyers can view gear at The Tack House and, where appropriate, we can help facilitate trying or checking the fit of certain gear before the purchase . No gear will leave our property - gear can be tried on at The Tack House, using our facilities.
-
If your item hasn’t sold by the end of the agreed consignment period, we’ll contact you to discuss the next step.
Depending on the item, this may include adjusting the price, extending the listing period or arranging for you to collect your gear.
-
Please contact us if you would like to withdraw an item from sale.
Any withdrawal conditions or applicable fees will be outlined in our consignment terms, particularly where we have already prepared, photographed and marketed the item.
-
Once your item has sold, payment has been received and the transaction is complete, we’ll arrange payment of your proceeds less the agreed consignment commission.
-
We ask that gear is reasonably clean and presented in a condition suitable for assessment and resale.
Items requiring significant cleaning, repairs or preparation may not be accepted, or an additional preparation fee may apply where agreed beforehand.
-
Pre-loved doesn’t have to mean perfect. Normal signs of use are expected, but items need to be safe, functional and in a condition we’re comfortable offering for sale.
We may decline gear that is excessively worn, damaged, unsafe or unlikely to sell.
-
Absolutely. If you’re having a proper tack-room clear-out, we’d love to hear from you.
For larger collections, get in touch and we can discuss the easiest way to assess your gear and arrange delivery or collection.
Selling your gear
-
Pre-loved equestrian gear is at the heart of The Tack House, but you’ll also find a carefully selected range of new equestrian products and giftware.
Each pre-loved item is individually assessed before being offered for sale.
-
Condition will vary from item to item, which is part of buying pre-loved.
We aim to describe and photograph our products accurately and clearly identify any significant signs of wear or known faults so you can make an informed decision before purchasing.
-
Yes. We assess pre-loved items before accepting them for sale and only offer gear we're comfortable putting The Tack House name behind.
However, pre-loved equipment has had a previous life, so buyers should always check that an item is suitable for their horse, intended use and individual circumstances.
-
Absolutely. One of the benefits of The Tack House is that we're not just an online store.
Customers are welcome to visit us and browse our collection in person during our opening hours or by arrangement where applicable.
-
Our rural location means we can offer something a little different from a traditional saddlery, where you can bring your horse shopping to try saddles and other gear before purchasing.
Arrangements must be made with us beforehand if you intend to bring your horse so we can make sure the visit is safe and suitable.
-
No. Horses and their equipment vary considerably, and suitability or fit cannot be guaranteed based on measurements, photographs or descriptions alone.
We strongly recommend seeking professional advice where fit is important, particularly when purchasing saddles.

Because many of our pre-loved products will be one-off items, once they're gone, they're gone.
We will do our best to keep online availability up to date, but on rare occasions an item may sell through another channel before the website has updated. If this happens after you've placed an order, we'll contact you and arrange a full refund.
-
If you're looking for something specific, get in touch. Our pre-loved stock is constantly changing, so even if we don't have it today, something suitable may come through the door tomorrow.
-
Buying pre-loved can give you access to quality equestrian brands and equipment for less than buying new, while extending the useful life of perfectly good gear.
It’s better for your budget, better for reducing waste and gives quality equestrian gear another chance to be used and loved.
